Royal Enfield to double production by 2013

Royal Enfield has secured a 50-acre site for its new factory at the SIPCOT Industrial Growth Centre, close to the historic motorcycle manufacturer's existing plant at Chennai, on the South East coast of India.

Due for completion by the first quarter of 2013, the new plant will be equipped to produce the entire product range of Royal Enfield motorcycles and will increase the company’s current capacity from 70,000 to 150,000 machines per annum.

Demand for Royal Enfield motorcycles, which have been produced in India since 1949 but retain their 'British DNA', has increased significantly over recent years and, in spite of investment in new plant, the existing factory is reaching capacity. Following the introduction of the new fuel-injected engine in 2009, with subsequent advantages in performance and reliability, demand for Royal Enfield motorcycles has grown worldwide, while the booming Indian economy has driven increased domestic sales too.

Since opening the Royal Enfield factory in Chennai in 1955, the city formerly known as Madras has attracted many key players in global automotive industry, including Nissan, Renault, Hyundai and Komatsu, which offers significant supply chain benefits to the motorcycle manufacturer.

Royal Enfield Open Weekend is hot stuff

Now firmly established in the motorcycling calendar, Royal Enfield’s open weekend attracted 2000 visitors to the Watsonian Squire factory in the Cotswolds over 25th-26th June. With bright sunshine and temperatures reaching 29 degrees C (80 fahrenheit) people took full advantage of the fleet of demonstrator machines available and more than 250 test rides were taken, expertly guided around local roads by the Cheltenham and Cotswold Advanced Motorcyclists. Rides in the Royal Enfield/GP Manx sidecar combination, featured recently in BBC Springwatch, were in constant demand, with 150 passengers enjoying their first experience of a trip in a chair.

There was considerable interest in the new Bullet 500, set to sell at £3995 on the road, which unveiled to British customers for the first time at the event. Other attractions included motorcycle adventurer, author and Royal Enfield expert Gordon May, who is prepaing to ride his 1953 Bullet from the North Cape in Norway to the South Cape of Africa next year. MAG promoting Get a Grip. Trials ace and ISDT gold medallist Johnny Brittain (pictured) dropped by on the Saturday and talked to master of ceremonies Jim Reynolds about his successful years riding Royal Enfields.

Shipston-on-Stour Sea Scouts were kept busy in the refreshment tent, serving 350 portions of their now famous curry, not to mention countless bacon baps and sausage butties.

Prizes were awarded for the best motorcycles ridden to the factory on both days, (judged by Frank and Rowena from Real Classic magazine); on Saturday a rare 1953 Royal Enfield Meteor twin won the prize and on Sunday the laurels went to a Triumph Tiger 650 and Watsonian GP Classic DL outfit. Perhaps the most unusual vehicle in the car park, which was packed with interesting bikes, was a yellow Messerschmitt bubble car.

Congratulations to Mark Mumford whose 1953 Royal Enfield Meteor was chosen as Best Bike Ridden to the 2011 Royal Enfield Open Weekend on Saturday.

Mark had ridden his bike from Northamptonshire to the annual event, held at the Watsonian Squire factory in the Cotswolds, home to Royal Enfield in the UK since 1999.

Selected from hundreds of machines by Frank and Rowena from Real Classic magazine, Mark's twin cylinder Meteor is largely original, apart from the chocolate brown paint scheme, applied by the previous owner.

Royal Enfield dealers head for the hills

Royal Enfield dealers from across the country hit the road for a hard day's ride around the Cotswold hills for their annual conference.

"Rather than sitting everyone in a conference room and showing them power point presentations and graphs, we thought we should make the most of the weather and get out to ride the product instead" explains sales director Ben Matthews.

Thirty machines, including a Bullet Classic sidecar outfit as support vehicle, travelled the 140 mile route, stopping for coffee at the Gloucestershire and Warwickshire steam railway, followed by lunch at the Watsonian factory, home to Royal Enfield in the UK. In the afternoon the group rode to the market town of Witney, (now famous as the constituency of Prime Minister David Cameron), where they were given a private tour of the Wychwood brewery, famed for its craftily crafted Hobgoblin ale.

The day was rounded off with an informal dinner at which awards were presented to the best-performing dealerships, won for the ninth consecutive year by Haywards of Cambridge. Watsons Motor works of Leominster carried off Best New Dealer, while Berrybrook Motors of Exminster and 3X Motorcycles of Ringwood were both Highly Commended for the largest increase in sales.

We recently spent a day in the Penines/Lake District putting the new Battle Green Bullet through its paces. It coped admirably with a wide variety of roads and conditions, covering well over 150 miles, from fast winding A-roads to 30mph crawls skirting the edge of Lake Windermere. Top speed was more than adequate for dual carriageways and fuel consumption was pretty much spot on the factory's 80mpg figure. It certainly blended in with the scenery!

Royal Enfield Open Weekend 25th and 26th June 2011

Royal Enfield UK will be throwing open their doors to welcome enthusiasts to their sixth annual open weekend on Saturday/Sunday 25th/26th June.

Held at the historic Watsonian-Squire sidecar factory, located between the scenic Cotswold towns of Moreton-in-Marsh and Chipping Campden, the event has a reputation for a friendly 'village fête' atmosphere and attracts around two thousand people over the weekend.

The complete 2011 range of Royal Enfield motorcycles will be on display and test rides, accompanied by IAM riders, are available on all models over both days. Places are allocated on a first come, first served basis, so visitors should arrive early to book a seat. Don't forget to bring a helmet, appropriate riding gear and driving licence.

Other attractions include an opportunity to browse the sidecar workshops, spare parts counter and a display of Royal Enfield branded casual clothing and accessories. Freshly prepared food is available on site.

Motorcycle journalist and world traveller Gordon May returns to the event, as does 'master of ceremonies' Jim Reynolds, who will provide a running commentary along with technical talks and celebrity interviews.

Entry is free and everyone is welcome, whether they ride a Royal Enfield or not. Prizes will be awarded on both days for the best machine, of any make, ridden to the event.

Winner of unique Hobgoblin

Midlander Paul Maullin is the lucky winner of a unique ‘Hobgoblin Bullet’ motorcycle, commissioned from Royal Enfield UK by the Wychwood Brewery for a free to enter prize draw that attracted more than 56,000 entries. Based on the 500cc Royal Enfield Classic, the petrol tank, mudgaurds, tool boxes and forks were painted the same blue that is found on the labels of bottles of Hobgoblin ale and a large Hobgoblin graphic is laquered onto the tank too. The standard seat is replaced with a two-tone item. Paul (pictured left) travelled down to the brewery in the Cotswold town of Witney to collect the exclusive machine from Chris Keating (right), senior brand manager at the Wychwood Brewery.

Some people buy a motorcycle to move themselves from A to B, but when singer Songwriter Gray Hawke bought a Royal Enfield it moved him to write a song. Here's his story;

"I got a wonderful motorcycle earlier this year - a Royal Enfield Bullet 500efi DL. As with most truly life-changing experiences, it had to have a song. I'd written a lyric, found what I think is a really catchy chorus and got a rhythm and feel for the song nailed about a month ago, but I was really struggling to find a tune and structure for the verses".

"Anyway, I decided to give it another bash yesterday (27th May) and finally got something that worked. A bit quirky and asymetrical - also quite difficult to remember! As I was already planning to go to Commonfolk yesterday, I gave the new song a run out in front of an audience - the first time I've ever finished and performed a song on the same day".

"It went pretty well - a few very positive comments from audience members afterwards, even though it was obviously a bit rough. Definitely one to polish up".

Royal Enfield's Electra EFI DL - directly descended from the original 1955 model

This is the Royal Enfield Electra EFI DL, the latest incarnation of the Bullet, which has been in continuous production since 1955 (or possibly earlier, depending on how you measure it). At any rate, this machine has rolled out of the same factory that started making Enfield motorcycles in 1955.

Its frame, 19" wheels, headlight nacelle, black and chrome tank with hand painted gold pinstripes and rubber knee pads, and chrome mudguards are instantly recognisable as coming from the original Bullet and and authentic Avon Speedmaster tyres enhance the period appearance of this 500cc air cooled single cylinder motorcycle.

Park it up at any classic bike event and it will blend in seamlessly - even the exhaust note captures the essence of a classic British bike.

But the engine is a thoroughly modern affair. Just like its predecessor, The Electra's engine retains pushrod construction, with a bore of 84mm and 90mm stroke. Which is why it sounds like a classic bike and delivers plently of torque (41.3 Nm of torque at 4000rpm, if you wondered). However, fuel injection, unit construction, improved lubrication and 5-speed gearbox operated via a wet multiplate clutch, makes the Electra EFI a pleasure to ride. Power is increased to 28 BHP and it is possible to use this to the max with complete reliability - meaning that cruising at motorway speeds and spritied riding along A-roads is achievable all day long.

Royal Enfield's British distributor, Watsonian Squire, has been experiencing increased interest since one of their distinctive Bullet Classic sidecar outfits featured in the latest Harry Potter blockbuster. So the team at the Cotswold factory wasn’t going to let a little bit of cold weather and a light dusting on snow interrupt their business.

In this photo General Manager Rob Jones can be seen checking that all icicles are neatly arranged and of regulation length.

Staff at company HQ in the Costwolds had to battle through sub zero temperatures and up to 12" on snow to make it into work, but in spite of the exceptional conditions (the coldest winter since 1986) the company continued to function..

Fury unleashed at Motorcycle Live

Developed by Royal Enfield's UK distributor, Watsonian Squire, and based on the fuel-injected Electra, the flat-track inspired Fury is being launched Motorcycle Live this November. Produced exclusively for British customers, the Fury is first new model in 40 years to feature twin silencers, which allow the 499cc single cylinder engine to breathe more freely, producing a distinctive exhaust note.
Wide western style bars dominate the front end of the Fury, sitting on a specially made billet aluminium top yoke. The traditional nacelle, seen on all other models in the range, is replaced with a chrome headlight and digital instrument panel.

The design team at Watsonian also gave the rear end of the bike a radical makeover, replacing the twin saddle with a flat track style glass fibre seat unit, incorporating a discrete tail light and chrome mini indicators.

Its original namesake was introduced in 1959 and destined exclusively for the US export market. Less than 200 were built in Royal Enfield's Redditch factory and production ceased in the early 1960's.

Due in showrooms early next year, the Royal Enfield Fury will sell for £5500 in black and at £5895 in blue and white colour schemes.

In San Francisco there is a new Thermidor restaurant (in the Mint Plaza area), which serves a specialt drink called the Watsonian Squire (cost $9). Royal Enfield's 500cc Classic in Lewis Leathers trim is now in production, with the first customers taking delivery of this limited edition model.

Conceived by vintage style aficionado Nick Clements, (www.nickclements.co.uk), of the Royal College of Art in London, this specially commissioned model pays homage to Britain's oldest motorcycle clothing company, Lewis Leathers, which was established in London's West End in 1892.

Based around the current Bullet Classic 500 that is powered by Royal-Enfield's new fuel-injected single cylinder engine, Clements has given the popular machine a complete makeover, enhancing its traditional appearance with numerous vintage styling cues. Featuring a special paint scheme on the tank with matching graphics on the mudguards and side panels, the Lewis Leathers limited edition also has a bespoke two-tone solo leather seat in black and cream. RAF Cosford Air Show

We received this letter from RAF Cosford thanking us for lending them a brace of Trials bikes for their air show. Being military types they assumed they were Lee Enfields (the famous rifles) not Royal Enfields (the famous motorcycles), although the Redditch factory originally supplied parts to the Enfield armaments factory (hence "Built Like a Gun") so it all makes sense in the end.

Anyway, the RAF loved the bikes, which "coped well both in the heat of the morning and the rain and mud of the afternoon."

Our staff also enjoyed themselves at the air show and we hope to return next year.

New Battle Green colour for Royal Enfield Bullet Classic 500

For 2010 the Royal Enfield Bullet Classic will be available in a Battle Green uniform in tribute to the manufacturer's long association with the Indian Army, which dates back to 1949. With bodywork, frame and wheel rims painted in matt green, the Battle Green model offers a distinctive vintage military aesthetic, but is in all other respects a modern motorcycle for today's roads.

Powered by the latest 500cc fuel injected engine that was introduced in 2009, the Battle Green Classic produces 28bhp with 41.3Nm of torque @ 4000rpm. Along with the new engine the Classic has smaller 18” wheels (compared to the previous 19” size) shod with Avon Road Rider tyres. This package delivers enhanced performance and handling with reduced emissions and maintenance compared to the machines originally supplied to the armed forces.

Demand for Royal Enfield motorcycles is so strong that the factory has announced plans to double production, with progressive increases in capacity over the next three years, allowing the brand to continue to keep pace with the brisk sales of its new model line. Output is forecast to grow from 52,000 motorcycles this year to 70,000 units for 2011, reaching 90,000 in 2012 and finally 100,000 units or more by 2013.

The Battle Green Bullet Classic can return up to 80mpg and retails for £4895- on the road, with a 2-year warranty for peace of mind.

Royal Enfield Trials at Cosford Airshow

Royal Enfield joined the RAF recently, when two Trials bikes were chosen for emergency/escort/logistics duties at the Cosford Airshow. Both macines were used continuously between 6.30am and 8pm (or should that be "Zero six hundred to twenty hundred hours, over") with numerous starts, crawler work, some periods of brisk "situation attendances" and all in a mixture of 25 degrees heat interspersed with torrential thunderstorms.

"The RAF personnel were heaping praise on the machines all day, especially when the weather turned nasty in the afternoon and the vintage trials pattern Ensign tyres enabled them to get the large crowds [50,000 people!] away safely" reports Rob Jones, General Manager at Royal Enfield UK (2nd from left).

As a matter of interest the plane in the background is a Jaguar ground attack jet, which was in service with the RAF until 2007. Apparently it is slightly faster than a Royal Enfield.

Wychwood Brewery's Hobgoblin has teamed up with the classic British motorcycle brand Royal Enfield to create an exclusive ‘Hobgoblin Bullet' model.

The craftily crafted Hobgoblin beer brand features on the unique machine, which will be given away free in a prize draw.

Ian Ward, brand manager at Wychwood, said: "The Hobgoblin Bullet is a great ‘one off' with a unique blue paint job and legendary graphics of the Hobgoblin, there was no way we could put a price on it. So we've chosen to give it away to one lucky beer and bikes fan."

Royal Enfield’s fleet of demonstrator bikes was kept busy at the company’s open weekend, when a record 319 test rides were taken – the largest number in the event’s 5-year history. Cheltenham and Cotswold Advanced Motorcyclists guided riders through the country lanes surrounding the Watsonian Squire factory, home to Royal Enfield in the UK since 1999.

Visitors arrived on the widest variety of machines, including an Ariel 3 trike and Honda Silverwing sidecar outfit. On Saturday a Norton Commando High Rider won the prize for Best Machine ridden to the event (judged and awarded by Real Classic magazine) and on Sunday the honours went to a pristine 1953 Royal Enfield Bullet.

Special thanks go to regular guests, including motorcycle adventurer and Royal Enfield expert Gordon May, who has just returned from riding a BSA Bantam overland to Egypt, and world sidecar champion passenger Stan Dibben. Jim Reynolds returned as master of ceremonies, while Frank and Rowena from Real Classic were kept busy talking to readers of their popular publication. Freshly cooked food was provided once again by the Shipston-on-Stour Sea Scouts, who expanded their popular curry menu with a new chilli, while local Cotswold ice creams were available to cool down afterwards. Wychwood Brewery, famous for Hobgoblin Ale, travelled from the other side of the Cotswolds in their 1951 Bedford dray, bringing taster packs of their cask ales.

No visit to the Watsonian Squire factory would be complete without a ride in a sidecar and the two demo outfits, a classic Royal Enfield/GP Manx combination and sporty Yamaha XXR1300 paired with a Squire ST3, were both in constant demand, with many passengers enjoying their first experience of a trip in a chair. Royal Enfield dealers from across the UK gathered for the annual dealer conference at Prescott in Gloucestershire, home of the famous speed hill climb. Encouraged by a positive response to the new fuel-injected engines from both media and public, dealers had an opportunity to see the new collection of genuine Royal Enfield clothing and accessories, supported by a range of in-store merchandising.

For the first time in eight years there was a photo-finish for the coveted Dealer of the Year award, with Midlands Royal Enfield (Steve Smith, above left with Ben Matthews from Royal Enfield) finishing in joint first place with Hayward's of Cambridge (David 'Stan' Stanley with trophy).

Woodsman in the Wychwood

The Wychwood brewery, located in Witney close to one of Britain's most ancient forests, hosted the UK launch of the new Woodsman model from Royal Enfield motorcycles. First produced in Britain in 1901, Royal Enfield have been manufactured in India since 1955, but remain popular in the UK and their importer's public relations agency is based in Witney. Although powered by a brand new electronically fuel-injected engine, the Woodsman will look familiar to riders who remember Royal Enfield from the Fifties and Sixties.

Unveiled at the NEC Bike Show on 26th November, the Woodsman EFI is the latest UK-designed variant of Royal Enfield’s Bullet to be powered by the new fuel-injected unit construction engine and is new for 2010. Like the original Woodsman, which was produced by Royal Enfield between 1955 -’59 and sold in the USA under the Indian brand, it is a 499cc Bullet single with high bars and a raised exhaust. However, there the similarities end, because the new Woodsman also features a solo seat, handy mini luggage rack, rear set footrests and an alloy bash plate too.

Routed around the machine’s left side (standard exhausts run along the right side) the high level system is lighter than the original part and has been re-engineered to work in harmony with the engine management unit, allowing the engine to breathe more freely and creating the classic ‘British single’ exhaust note.

Introduced to comply with tough new European emissions regulations, the all-new 499cc engine retains bore and stroke of 84mm x 90mm, but with electronic fuel injection by Keihin of Japan and a 5-speed gearbox. This is operated via a 7-plate wet clutch, so it is both light and accurate. Power output is 28 BHP in standard form with 41.3 Nm of torque at 4000rpm and tested under Euro 3 conditions the engine returns just under 80 mpg, which means an impressive tank range of over 200 miles before switching to reserve.

Due in dealers' showrooms in the New Year, the Royal Enfield Woodsman EFI will sell for £4,699 on the road.

ROYAL MINT - ENFIELD INVEST IN GROWTH

Royal Enfield has announced plans to invest $13.8 million in order to double its motorcycle manufacturing capacity.

"We have so far invested 650 million rupees in our Chennai plant and will invest a similar amount to raise capacity to 100,000 units a year from the current 50,000," Group Chairman Siddhartha Lal told Dow Jones Newswires.

The company, which currently sells between 4,500 and 5,000 motorcycles a month, expects to sell 50,000 motorcycles in 2009.

While domestic demand will swallow the majority of new production, export sales are predicted to account for an increased proportion of sales, according to Mr. Lal. "From 5% of our total sales now, we see overseas sales growing to 15% in the next four-five years."

New models, such as the Bullet Classic 500, benefit from improved reliability and modern components (e.g. electronic fuel injection), stimulating demand in overseas markets. Royal Enfield exported 1,700 motorcycles between January and September 2009, with the highest number going to the UK, USA and Germany.

Royal Enfield will be launching a new model, The Woodsman at the NEC Bike show (27th November – 6th December) and there will even be an opportunity to test ride one of their motorcycles powered by the new EFI engine.

Royal Enfield have given their café racer-inspired Clubman a welcome power boost and the option to carry a passenger too.

Powered by the lighter and more efficient new 500cc fuel injected unit construction engine, the Clubman now produces 28 hp, while also meeting tough Euro 3 emissions requirements. The distinctive upswept ‘Gold Star’ style silencer fitted to the right side, which is shorter and lighter than the standard part, has been re-engineered to work in harmony with the engine management unit, allowing the engine to breathe more freely and creating a classic exhaust note.

With its 4.5-gallon hand-polished aluminium tank, the Clubman immediately looks stylistically very different from the road version of the Electra, on which it is based, and this appearance is enhanced by the addition of ‘ace’ drop handlebars, rear-set footrests and a hand made fibreglass seat unit. The design team paid particular attention to ergonomics so that the riding position feels sportier, but does not sacrifice comfort or cramp the rider.

Another new feature for 2009 is the re-designed solo seat unit, which has a removable cowl that covers the pillion seat. This was produced in response to demand from customers who wanted to retain the Clubman’s sporty appearance but also required passenger-carrying capacity.

Royal Enfield make better bike taxis

Enterprising French motorcycle taxi company TacoandClô have chosen to use Royal Enfields to transport their customers in preference to the Honda Goldwings more commonly used for that purpose. According to Claude Crampe, who runs the taxi firm in the Southern French city of Montpelier, his clients enjoy the retro style of the Royal Enfield as they are transported to the beach or airport. According to Moto magazine, taxi bikes have been successful in France as they cut journey times and customers can be transported door-to-door more easily than by car. EFI engine injects interest at Royal Enfield Open Weekend

Interest in Royal Enfield’s new fuel injected unit construction engine drew an estimated 2000 visitors to the company’s Open weekend, held at the Watsonian-Squire factory on 20th/21st June. Existing and potential customers took an opportunity to take a free test ride on models from the 2009 line-up and, led by observers from the Gloucestershire IAM, the bikes were ridden a total of 1600 miles around the local Cotswold roads over both days.
Now in its fourth year, the event is a showcase for all aspects of Royal Enfield ownership, stimulating demand throughout the company's 50-strong dealer network. Alongside genuine accessories, the new collection of Royal Enfield casual clothing was launched and visitors could obtain live insurance quotes too. Specialist Royal Enfield tour operators Arden Motorcycles from the Cotswolds and Bike Astur from Spain were kept busy talking to people considering a holiday on two wheels.
In spite of the large numbers, the Open Weekend has retained its informal atmosphere; catering is provided by the Shipston-on-Stour Sea Scouts, (who cooked a choice of three curries in addition to more traditional hot food), locally produced ice creams were available and there was access to the Watsonian factory, where the bikes are prepared before despatch to dealers and sidecars are manufactured too. Jim Reynolds was master of ceremonies, interviewing many interesting people, including star guest, Stan Dibben, who won two world sidecar world championships in the 1950’s on Watsonian sidecar outfits.
Plenty of money was raised for worthwhile causes; Ian Aspey was promoting his charity ride from Lands End to John O’Groats, which he will be making on his Bullet Sixty-5 this September, and £275 was raised for the CJ Riders Fund by raffling a giant chocolate bar .

Royal Enfield have given their popular Trials model the new fuel-injected unit construction engine for 2009, along with some other new features too.
Inspired by Royal Enfield’s outstanding record of success in the International Six Days’ Trial, during the glory years for British riders between 1948-1953, the Trials is designed to capture the sprit of the ‘unstoppable Bullet’ in a package that will be comfortable to ride on today’s roads. Like the previous Trials model, the EFI version features braced ‘scrambles’ handlebars, alloy mudguards and matching bash plate, new tail light and solo seat. Updates for 2009 include vintage style block pattern trials tyres and a mini luggage rack, for which an optional pillion seat pad is available.

Royal Enfield Open Weekend 20th and 21st June 2009

Royal Enfield motorcycles have enjoyed consistent growth in the UK over the past decade and the full 2009 model range will be on show at their official Open Weekend on 20th/21st June. Royal Enfield climbs the charts

Royal Enfield dealers from across the country gathered for their annual conference at Prescott, home to the famous hill climb track, where they celebrated the historic brand’s ninth consecutive year of sales growth in the UK.

Sales Director Ben Matthews announced that over 800 Royal Enfields were registered to UK owners in 2008, 31% more than in 2007, which in turn was 17% up on the previous year. During 2008 Royal Enfield comfortably outsold several other European heritage brands, including Moto Guzzi.

Awards were presented to the best-performing dealerships, won for the seventh year in a row by Haywards of Cambridge (above left). However, they had been given a close run for their money by Richardsons of Surrey and Midlands Royal Enfield, the latter scooping Best New Dealer (right). CG Chell of Stafford was Highly Commended for the largest increase in sales.

Dealers also had an opportunity to enjoy the spring sunshine and Cotswold roads with test rides on the new Bullet Classic 500, powered by the fuel-injected unit construction engine.

Across Britain by Bullet

On the 14th September Ian Aspey will be leaving Twyning in Gloucestershire to ride from Lands End to John o’Groats using only A and B roads. This is a round trip of approx 2,000 miles taking about 2 weeks to complete.

"I will be riding my Royal Enfield 500 bullet motor cycle" explains Ian. "This bike has hardly changed in design since the 1950’s and draws crowds of admirers. Last autumn whilst taking part in Enduro Himalaya on a similar bike, I met Dave the medic, a member of the Midlands Air Ambulance team and was impressed by the dedication and skill of these guys. I think the county air ambulance is a wonderful organisation and you never know when you might need them. As I am a photographer I made a DVD of the ride and fellow riders generously donated to the cause and raised a total of £700. I so enjoyed riding my Enfield in the Himalayas I’ve decided to continue fund raising by travelling from Land’s End to John O’Groats and hope to raise over £3,000. I also hope to meet up with some of the guys from the Himalays trip en route".

Record sales for Royal Enfield as bike market stalls

Sales of the Royal Enfield Bullet grew by nearly 30% last year, bucking the national trend which saw motorcycle registrations fall by 3.4%. This is the ninth successive annual growth for the Bullet, which has been in continuous production for over 50 years, and overshadows the company’s impressive 15% rise in UK sales during 2007.

“Motorcycling is predominantly a leisure activity these days and the classic styling and low running costs of the Royal Enfield make it an attractive proposition at times when money is tight,” explains Ben Matthews, UK Sales Director for Royal Enfield.

Tough new Euro 3 emissions regulations mean that the 350cc and 500cc Bullet models, powered by the original 4-speed iron-barrelled engine, could no longer be sold in the UK after December 2008 and demand proved strong as customers took advantage of the final chance to purchase a brand new bike that has remained virtually unchanged over the past half century.

This year all new Royal Enfield motorcycles sold in Europe will be powered by the new 500cc unit construction fuel injected engine. Its modern design is more powerful, producing 41.3 Nm of torque at 4000rpm, but the pushrod construction, with a bore of 84mm and 90mm stroke, still delivers an authentic-feeling ‘British Single’ experience.
